UWIC 47 v 22 Penallta

After last weeks game in torrential rain Penallta visited UWIC in glorious sunny conditions. The students opened the scoring with a penalty in the first minute and continued to attack straight from the restart. Although winning a glut of possesion and holding onto the ball through several phases, UWIC were unable to break through the Penallta defence and had to content themseves with a well struck drop kick from their outside half. After 25 minutes their scrum half quicky exploited a gap from quick ruck ball to score the games first try.
Penallta then suffered a further blow when prop Martin Dunn was forced off with a shoulder injury replaced by Mark Bassett. Penallta rallied to score a try by Dale Powell from a well rehearsed lineout move.
A mistake from a defensive lineout then gifted UWIC a try. Straight from the kick off Penallta were awarded a penalty and elected to kick to touch rather than take the chance of 3 points.From the resulting lineout the Penallta forwards drove over the line with Robert Channon claiming the touchdown. UWIC however finished the half with another penalty.
The half time talk seemed to have an affect with Penallta winning more ball and began attacking out wide. From one such passage of play the ball was sent out to the right before ruck ball was won and sent back along the line resulting in winger James Powell side stepping back inside the covering full back for an excellent try.
With Penallta suddenly back in the game the referee upset the visiting players and supporters after awarding UWIC yet another penalty under the posts, followed quickly with a yellow card to captain Dale Powell. Without a recognised hooker on the bench Penallta had to elect for 10 minutes of passive scrums and in so doing lost the right to play the remaining replacements. With UWIC regaining confidence, a neat midfield break saw them score under the posts.
Penallta - to their credit responded with a fourth try via their player of the match, centre Steve Davies and thus secured a valuable bonus point.
With the game entering its last 10 minutes two soft tries were gifted to UWIC to end the game with a 47 -22 loss.
Penallta must quickly realise that silly mistakes made in Division 1 are quickly exploited and turned into points but will be buoyed by the fact that they are always capable of scoring tries.
Next week sees the eagerly awaited visit of high flying neighbours Bargoed.
Penalltas second string although depleted by injuries and first team call ups secured an impressive 20-10 league win against a strong Abertridwr side, whilst the youth enjoyed a morale boosting 17 - 11 win away to Ynysybwl.
