Penallta 21 v 14 Ystrad Rhondda

On a gloriously sunny afternoon, Penallta played their first ever game on their new Trinity Fields pitch in front of a large crowd against Ystrad Rhondda.  Several changes from the previous week were made - with a totally revamped backline including Richard Rowe, Karl Rees , Shaun Robson and debutant centre Simon Skinner.

It was  Ystrad Rhondda who started the stronger, winning a constant supply of ball and running hard at the Penallta defence. However  turnover ball on the half way and quick passing released Shaun Robson who used his speed to score out wide.
This was shortly followed by a Simon Skinner penalty after co centre Steve Davies had put in a big tackle.
With Ystrad getting the upper hand in the scrum they used their outside half and full back to kick their way down field, however any loose kicks were turned into counter attacks every time by Penallta's speedy back three of Shaun Robson, Karl Rees and James Powell.

 Penallta increased their lead after a loose ball was picked up by second row Devin Morgan who broke through several tackles, his loose pass was flicked up off the floor by number 8 Geraint Thomas into the hands of hard working prop Robert Channon who bludgeoned his way over the line.

With Wayne Jervis keeping his side in the game with a drop kick and penalty either side of a  Richard Rowe penalty the half ended 16- 6 in Penallta's favour.

Shortly after half time Ystrad got right back into the game after a series of scrums led to a penalty which was taken quickly to flanker Masin Al Azzawi to score in the corner.

 With Richard Rowe gaining confidence in his new outside half role and the centre partnership of Simon Skinner and Steve Davies looking strong and dangerous Penallta continued to attack at every opportunity.From good scrum ball Richard Rowe sent a long pass out to James Powell hitting the line at speed passing onto Karl Rees who drew his defender before passing to Shaun Robson who used his strength to stay on his feet after a big tackle to score a superb try.


After a much improved team performance where Gavin Davies, Andrew Jackson stood out along with improving Prop Martin Dunne, Penallta will gain confidence for their difficult away Game to Llanharan next week.
