1st November 2008 Penallta Youth 8 v 3 Newport HSOB (Half Time 3 v 3 ) Penallta Youth played their 3rd league of the season hoping to put a win on
the score board against visitors Newport HSOB. Penallta started well and spent
the first 10-15 minutes in Newport's half but because of some desperate defence
by the visitors and over eagerness by a side who had several players playing out
of position were unable to score .
After 20 minutes the Youth were awarded a rare penalty which Squirrel
(Bleddyn Corns ) easily converted but Newport soon tied the score by kicking
one of their many penalties!
After the turn around Penallta once again put Newport under the cosh but
despite dominating the scrums and open play were only able to add one
unconverted try by last weeks man of the match Seb Toms. Seb, who has shown his
versatility this season by playing flanker, centre and for this match full
back, made a scything run through a flatfooted Newport defence to cross the white
wash in the corner to make the final score 8-3 to the home side.
Apart from the line outs the "B & Gs" had the majority of both
possession and play but didn't turn it into points which at this level is really
not good enough - but the players know what they need to do in the next week or so
before they face a visit from London Welsh.
With the advancement of scrum half Howie Walsh to the first team, Luke
Purnell who has stepped up from vice captain now becomes captain for the rest of
the season, a role in which he is showing increasing maturity and attitude.
Penallta's latest signing scrum half Arran Evans slotted seamlessly into
the team and looked like he had played with this side for years. A quick mention
to "the Ab" (Ross Edwards) who showed he has plenty of Penallta fighting spirit in
him.
All in all, Penallta Youth must in future league games, take all their
chances to score if they want to put up a good show in division one.
