Penallta visited Rumney on Saturday for their first game in Division one and found themselves 22 nil down within 25 minutes as well as losing influential flanker Huw Stevens to a nasty facial injury.  Making numerous mistakes and guilty of missing tackles, Penallta found it difficult to come to terms with Rumney's fast backline and were continually on the back foot. 

With even the most ardent Penallta supporters fearing a drubbing the forwards slowly began to settle with Andrew Jackson, Geraint Thomas and Devin Morgan making powerful drives and started to win decent scrum and lineout ball.  This cause was helped with the sin bining of two Rumney players in quick succession. To their credit Rumney showed that they could defend as well as attack and managed keep their line intact until half time.

After the interval Penallta came out with all guns blazing and just two minutes into the half, a close range break by Geraint Thomas led to Andrew Jackson claiming the Pitmen's first try.  Debutant outside half Scott Bessant  added the points and in the fiftieth minute centre Steve Richards made a neat interception to score under the posts, Bessant again taking the conversion and bringing the score to 22 - 14.   A Rumney penalty was soon cancelled out with 3 points from Bessant.

After an excellentl break out of defence from Penallta youth team scrum half Hywel Walsh scored with a typical scrum half try to make the score 25 - 22 with just 5 minutes remaining and an amazing come back seemed on the cards.   It was not to be however, when a Penallta mistake in their own 22 resulted in a try for Rumney followed immediately by another when a speculative kick up field bounced nicely for their winger to speed over.

Penallta's 2nd team looked impressive in a 41 - 12 home win against Ynysybwl.

Next Saturday Penallta entertain Ystrad Rhondda with the seconds away to rivals Bargoed and the youth making the long journey to Carmarthen for a Welsh Youth Cup game
